I’m so thrilled to read your perspective on this! The only correction I would offer (that you would have no reasonable way of knowing) is that we did in fact in the late 90s and early 2000s have access to really good TV from previous eras thanks to syndication. TV networks would pay for that content at a much cheaper rate, and since we had limited options on what to watch, it was common to catch series from the 60s, 70s and 80s during the day so you did in fact learn a lot.
YOU'RE MY DREAM READER - i wrote my undergrad thesis partially ab the evolution of TV consumption, and i love getting firsthand perspective on what it was all like pre-streaming. im so curious about tv's current volume problem and why a rerun model (being told what to watch) keeps being the answer!
I barely needed convincing but you got me. Time to start ER. Also 10000% agree on season length- We should talk LOST! Definitely fits in with my own frustration at Netflix (etc.) for consistently making a “mini series” out of what is so clearly better suited to a movie.
I can't believe I've managed to completely avoid ER for so long. I guess this is my sign to binge it! That and all the times it got recommended to me this past weeks because I loved The Pitt.
